Torn brown paper banners grace the littered paths of Midway's refugees
with the hearts of legless dancers beating softly in the bearded lady's dreams
so pack your trunks and shed a tear for yester-year will never be today
and mourn your tattooed sweetheart as her dead revue goes shuffling away
The ticket girls with thunder thighs put patches on their lazy eyes and split
when the fire breathing jezebel old brimstone Jill threw down her torch and quit
you can catch the bus to Williamsburg or hitch a ride to San Francisco bay
and mourn their gypsy spirits as you think of something comforting to say
Their pagan souls have lost their grip along that rough and tumble trip to heaven
that caravan burned to the ground they closed their eyes and laid that spirit down
in Gypsy Town
All the burnt up bits of cheap cigars lay riddled under clotheslines baked in rust
while the stiff remains of lingerie and playing cards rolled softly in the dust
so pay your debts and burn the books for yester-year has bid it's last farewell
and mourn your tattoooed sweethearts as their dead revue goes shuffling off to hell
Their pagan souls have lost their grip along that rough and tumble trip to heaven
that caravan burned to the ground they closed their eyes and laid that spirit down
in Gypsy Town
