She wore a shotgun wedding dress
around her crooked barbed wire frame
out past the cemetery gates she'd pulled the curlers from her hair
and call the Devil out by name
We'd stumbled down to Dettman's shack
and dance that tribulation jive
she'd pull me in for one more kiss and then our hips began to twist
until that roadhouse came alive
Out on that Promissary Road
there were no secrets left to tell
before temptation had a name forbidden love went up in flames and led my
broken heart to hell
Lord, all that hard luck living burned
her subtle ways just left me cold
I found my way across the tracks before my spirit wound up trapped
out on that Promissay Road
No gospel train could carry me
No sinner's prayer could save my soul
there were no crosses left to bare the night I left her standing there
out on that Promissary Road.
That plywood shack burned to the ground
or that's what all the locals say
I think the Devil came around and took that house of sin on down
to help him pass the time away
Out on that Promissary Road
there were no secrets left to tell
before temptation had a name forbidden love went up in flames and led my
broken heart to hell
Lord, all that hard luck living burned
her subtle ways just left me cold
I found my way across the tracks before my spirit wound up trapped
out on that Promissay Road.
