at the end of our road trip we fina carnivsl of souls, twisitng up and down life's roller coaster past tall dark evangelists, straw bale royalty and the remnants of an ancient past. Welcome to the end of your journey. Welcome to the Plank Road Drag. The great ancient highway towards the eternal gates.
come and run a greasy hand
through spinning Jenny's hair again
she'll wind her way through some damn town
scratched off the map to hunker down
where the big iron wheels begin to whine
girl, they run on gin and turpentine
near ancient roller coaster tracks
that'll twist you 'round and crack your back
where the yard dogs dress in corduroy
and strum a union rag
for the angels judging tractor pulls
and good time girls beside the plank road drag
that straw bale queen's a skinny thing
with her silky clothes n' paper wings
shouts a high and lonesome call
to old time rounders one and all
ol' Black Eyed Suzie grabbed a boy
and cut a rug to Solder’s joy
but Old Joe Clark he couldn't stop
and Ragtime Annie lost her top
where the fairground's wild evangelist
pulled serpents from his bag
and Moses took another wife before he sealed
the deal beside the plank road drag
a crucifix of wire and sticks
will guard the remnants where they sit
old muscle cars and ag machines
arranged inside a rusted ring
where big iron wheels will never turn
and ticket stubs are what you burn
down ancient roller coaster tracks
that lead you down to hell and back
till faded forms rise from the cracks
remembering what they had
they'll dance some punk rock circus jig
in platinum wigs beyond the plank road drag
