I grew up in Denver, Colorado only to move at the age of fourteen to a small town of 1,200 people. I went to highschool with some of the most beautiful girls I've ever seen. Writing this song I placed a every part of every untouchable, unapproachable girl into the lead character "Belle" who "Bore the mark of the great beauty queens" and slowly slipped from her glory days into a bad marriage, waiting tables and splitting town just to end up dying from old age in some dive motel...all that beauty and glory in her youth couldn't save her. "Silver and gold from the trailer...sequins and jewels from the trash" Faded beauty from small town America.
she was long, she was tall, she was twisted
bore the mark of the great beauty queens
crowned her Belle at tri-county fairgrounds
in a tube top and low rise blue jeans

she was copper and fire from the kettle
she would whistle and scream through the night
down that highway the law had forgotten
purified from the absence of light

she was lust and desire, she was lonely.
spilling out of dollar store dress
with her big hair all pinned up and perfect
all that Tammy Faye make-up a mess
till that big ball and chain round her ankle
turned her cold as a bare kitchen floor
took to sleeping alone in her pick-up
couldn't lay in his bed anymore

she was silver and gold from the trailer
she was sequins and jewels from the trash
crowned her Belle at the tri-county fairgrounds
triple X by the light of the dash
earned enough spending cash waiting tables
packed a suitcase and got outta dodge
caught the last greyhound bus down to Boulder
just to die in some dive motor lodge

she was long, she was tall, she was twisted
bore the mark of the great beauty queens
crowned her Belle at tri-county fairgrounds
in a tube top and low rise blue jeans
